This Emergency First Aid at Work course in Birmingham runs at our partner centre in B90 and gives you the practical skills to act when someone collapses, chokes or bleeds seriously, at work, at home or on the street.
When someone stops breathing, an ambulance is already several minutes away. In that gap, the outcome depends almost entirely on whoever is standing closest.
Most people freeze, because nobody has ever shown them what to do. That’s the whole point of this course. By the end of the day you will have knelt on the floor and done chest compressions, opened an airway, put someone in the recovery position and worked through a bleeding casualty, so the actions are already in your hands rather than something you have only read about.
Managing an emergency incident Assessing the scene safely, identifying hazards, protecting yourself and others, prioritising treatment, and knowing exactly what to tell the emergency services when you call.
CPR and basic life support Hands-on adult CPR practice, what to do when someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, and how to keep going until help arrives.
Unconscious casualties and the recovery position Recognising unconsciousness, checking the casualty, monitoring breathing, and using the recovery position to keep an airway clear.
Choking Telling the difference between a mild and a severe obstruction, and responding correctly to each.
Bleeding and wounds Assessing wounds, controlling external bleeding, applying dressings, protecting yourself from bodily fluids, and recognising when bleeding needs urgent medical help.
Shock and seizures Spotting the signs of shock early, and keeping someone safe through a seizure without making things worse.
Common workplace injuries Burns, cuts and grazes, plus preventing cross-infection.
First aid is not something you learn from a slide. Your trainer demonstrates each procedure, then you practise it yourself: casualty assessment, CPR, the recovery position, choking response, managing bleeding and full scenario exercises.
Assessment happens as you go. There is no written exam and nothing to come back for.
Employers and designated first aiders. Every business has a legal duty to provide adequate first aid cover based on the risks in its workplace. Depending on its size and risks, that means an appointed person or a trained first aider on site.
Workplace teams. Retail staff, office and corporate employees, warehouse workers, hospitality teams, event staff, supervisors and managers.
Security professionals. The Emergency First Aid course is the first aid that Door Supervisor and Security Guard licence training needs. Our SIA Door Supervisor Course in Birmingham already includes it, as do all our Door Supervisor, Security Guard and refresher courses, where it is taught on day one as a half-day session in the morning. Book this course on its own only if you are training somewhere that leaves first aid out.
Individuals. Parents, carers, sports coaches and anyone who would rather know what to do than hope somebody else does.
Valid for three years, recognised by employers, and meeting HSE guidance for workplace first aid provision.
The HSE also recommends a short annual refresher between full requalifications, because practical skills like CPR fade fast without practice. Note your renewal date when the certificate is issued. It is easier than finding out it has lapsed during an inspection.
Our centre is in Shirley, Solihull, in the B90 postcode area.
For most people across the West Midlands that means simply driving in. M42 Junction 4 is minutes away and there is parking on site. If you would rather travel, Shirley station reaches Birmingham Moor Street or Snow Hill in 15 to 20 minutes, and the Stratford Road bus corridor runs frequent services into the city.
That makes it straightforward from Birmingham, Solihull, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Redditch, Bromsgrove and across the wider West Midlands.
If you need a team trained, call us and we will work with the centre to find dates that suit your rota. Booking several places at once is usually easier than sending people individually. We never take card details over the phone: we email you an invoice with a secure payment link, and companies pay the full amount.
The course costs £100 in total: £30 deposit to book, £70 at the centre on day one. Call 020 8050 4108 if you need a specific date.
