SIA licence renewal

SIA Refresher Course in London

Door Supervisors and Security Guards must complete refresher training before they renew an SIA licence. Every refresher we list includes the Emergency First Aid you need, taught on day one. Courses run at partner centres across London and in Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester, and you can book with a small deposit.

Door Supervisor refresher

For Door Supervisor licence holders renewing their licence. Two days, with Emergency First Aid taught in the first half of day one.

Security Guard refresher

For Security Guard licence holders. One day, with Emergency First Aid taught in the first half of the day. At Forest Gate, Battersea, Liverpool and Manchester you choose Door Supervisor or Security Guard when you book.

Refresher and CCTV bundles

Renew your Door Supervisor licence and add a CCTV licence in one booking: two days of refresher and three of CCTV, five days in all. You pay the balance at the centre on day one. The dates start with the refresher on a Saturday. Would rather start with CCTV? Call us to arrange it.

Free practice tests

Practise for the exams before you book, with answers explained.

What the refresher covers

The SIA introduced refresher training so that front-line officers keep their safety-critical skills up to date. The course updates you on what has changed since you first qualified and checks that you can still apply it.

Door Supervisor refresher. Emergency First Aid in the first half of day one, then updated content on searching, safeguarding vulnerable people, spiking and the terrorist threat, followed by a refresher in physical intervention skills. There are two units to pass. Unit 1, on door supervisor duties, ends with a 35-question multiple-choice exam of 55 minutes and a practical search. Unit 2, on physical intervention, ends with a 30-question multiple-choice exam of 45 minutes, a practical assessment and oral questions.

Security Guard refresher. The updated SIA units for security officers in one day, with Emergency First Aid in the first half of the day. You finish with a 28-question multiple-choice test of about 45 minutes and a practical assessment of your search technique.

How renewal works

  1. Book your refresher four to five months before your licence expires. If it has already expired, you can still book: the SIA lets you renew before your licence expires or up to three years after it expires.
  2. Complete your free ACT certificates on ProtectUK before the course. Our ACT training guide shows you how.
  3. Complete the course and pass the assessment. Results and certificates normally take two to three weeks. Delays at the awarding bodies can make it longer, so we cannot promise an exact date.
  4. Apply to renew online with the SIA. You can apply up to four months before expiry, and any unused time carries over to your new licence.
  5. Keep working while the SIA processes your application, as long as your current licence is still valid.

Renewing and adding CCTV

Renewal is a good moment to add a second licence. Our refresher and CCTV bundles take five days in total: the two-day Door Supervisor refresher, then the three-day CCTV course, at Bethnal Green, Stratford, Forest Gate, Canary Wharf and Battersea. You pay the whole balance at the centre on your first day. The dates we list start with the refresher on a Saturday. If you would rather start with CCTV, call us and we can arrange it. Send both licence applications to the SIA together and the second licence costs less.

For the full background on the rules, read our guide to SIA licence renewal. If you have never held a licence, you need the full Door Supervisor course instead.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a refresher course to renew my SIA licence?

Yes, if you hold a Door Supervisor or Security Guard licence. Refresher training has been compulsory for those renewals since 1 April 2025. CCTV and key holding licence holders do not currently need one.

Which refresher should I book?

Book the Door Supervisor refresher if you want to keep working on the door. Book the Security Guard refresher if you hold a guarding licence and plan to stay in guarding. If you hold a Door Supervisor licence but only work as a guard, the Door Supervisor refresher keeps both options open.

How long does the refresher take?

The Door Supervisor refresher takes two days, and at most centres you can do it over a weekend. The Security Guard refresher takes one day. Both include Emergency First Aid, taught in the first half of day one.

Do I need a separate first aid certificate?

No. Every refresher you book with us includes Emergency First Aid, so you finish with the first aid certificate the SIA asks for as part of the same booking.

Do I need ACT certificates before the refresher?

Yes. You need your ACT certificates before the course starts. ACT is free e-learning on the ProtectUK website, and our ACT training page explains how to complete it and download your certificates.

Can I take a refresher if my licence has expired?

Yes. The SIA lets you renew before your licence expires or up to three years after it expires. You cannot work in a licensed role while your licence has lapsed, though, so book as soon as you can.

When should I book?

Book four to five months before your licence expires. You can apply to renew up to four months early, and the SIA adds any time left on your old licence to the new one, so renewing early costs you nothing.

When do I get my certificate?

Results and certificates normally take two to three weeks after the course. Delays at the awarding bodies can make it longer, so we cannot promise an exact date.

How much does it cost?

Door Supervisor refreshers start from £200 and Security Guard refreshers from £200. Prices vary a little by centre, and each course page shows the exact fee and deposit.
