SIA mock test questions to try now

  1. 1. What does SCaN stand for in counter-terrorism training?
    • A. See, Check and Notify (correct answer)
    • B. Search, Contain and Neutralise
    • C. Secure, Call and Note
    • D. Spot, Challenge and Notify

SCaN training helps staff spot suspicious activity, check it, for example by politely engaging the person with good customer service, and notify the right people. A visible, alert security presence deters hostile reconnaissance.

  2. 2. Which of these is an internal customer for a security officer?
    • A. A delivery driver arriving at the gate
    • B. A member of the public in the car park
    • C. A visitor asking for directions
    • D. A colleague in your own company (correct answer)

Internal customers are people within your own organisation, such as colleagues and managers. External customers include visitors and members of the public.

  3. 3. When lifting a heavy box, which technique reduces the risk of injury?
    • A. Keep the load close to your body and avoid twisting (correct answer)
    • B. Bend your back and keep your legs straight
    • C. Twist at the waist to put the load down faster
    • D. Hold the load at arm's length so you can see

Safe manual handling means assessing the load, using a stable base, bending the knees, keeping the load close to the waist and avoiding twisting, in line with the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.

  4. 4. What does PBIED stand for?
    • A. Police-backed incident evacuation directive
    • B. Portable battery ignited electrical device
    • C. Person-borne improvised explosive device (correct answer)
    • D. Public building incident emergency drill

A PBIED is an explosive device carried or worn by a person. Other types include vehicle-borne (VBIED) and leave-behind (LBIED) devices.

  5. 5. Which of these could be an indicator of child sexual exploitation?
    • A. A young teenager arriving and leaving with different older adults (correct answer)
    • B. A group of pupils on a supervised school trip
    • C. A teenager shopping with a parent on a Saturday afternoon
    • D. A young person collecting a takeaway for their family

Indicators include children in the company of older people or antisocial groups, arriving and leaving with different adults, getting in and out of different cars, intoxication and sexualised behaviour.

  6. 6. A visitor tells you they are deaf and lip-read. How can you best help them understand you?
    • A. Speak to their companion rather than to them
    • B. Shout each word slowly and loudly into their ear
    • C. Turn away from them while you write everything down
    • D. Face them, speak clearly and make sure your mouth is visible (correct answer)

Facing the person with your mouth visible and speaking clearly at a normal pace helps lip-reading. Writing things down or using gestures can also help, but always talk to the person directly.

How the mock tests work

Each SIA licence course ends with multiple choice exams. The SIA sets the number of questions, the time allowed and the pass mark for every paper, and all awarding bodies follow the same standard. Our mock tests copy that format, so the full test feels like the real one.

Every test has three ways to practise:

  • Full mock test: a whole paper, with your answers checked at the end. For the SIA papers and the CSCS test it has the same number of questions and time limit as the real one.
  • Quick round: ten questions with no timer, for a short revision session.
  • Practice mode: the right answer and the reason after every question.

Each attempt draws a new set of questions from a larger bank, and the answers are shuffled, so you can keep practising without learning the order.

Which mock test do I need?

  • New door supervisor licence: Unit 1, the door supervisor paper, conflict management and physical intervention.
  • New security guard licence: Unit 1, the security guard paper and conflict management.
  • New CCTV licence: Unit 1 and the CCTV paper.
  • Renewing a door supervisor or security guard licence: the refresher mock test for your licence.

The practical parts of the course, such as searching, physical intervention techniques and the CCTV practical, are assessed by your trainer on the day, so they are not in these tests.

Questions about the mock tests

Are these the real SIA exam questions?

No. The real papers are confidential to the awarding bodies. Every question here was written for BookCourse from the SIA's published learning outcomes, so it tests the same knowledge in the same multiple choice format.

How many SIA exams are there?

It depends on the licence. Door supervisors sit four multiple choice papers, security guards three and CCTV operators two. The refresher courses for licence renewal have their own papers. The table above shows every paper.

Do I need to sign up to use the mock tests?

No. There is no account and no email address to give. Start any test, get your score straight away, and try again as often as you like.

How should I use the mock tests?

Start in practice mode to learn the reasons behind each answer, then sit the full timed mock test. When you pass it comfortably two or three times in a row, you are ready for the real paper.
