Renewing your door supervisor licence? Practise both refresher papers, the door supervisor refresher and the physical intervention refresher, timed like the real exams and with every answer explained.
Each paper is a separate exam on the course, so practise them one at a time.
Unit 1
Unit 2
The door supervisor refresher is a short course for licence holders. It starts with Emergency First Aid in the first half of day one, updates the skills that have changed most since the first licence courses, and ends with two exams. Before you go, complete your free ACT certificates on ProtectUK.
Unit 1, principles of working as a door supervisor (refresher) covers searching people and property, spotting and protecting vulnerable people, terror threat awareness and spiking. It is 35 questions in 55 minutes, and the pass mark is 25 correct.
Unit 2, physical intervention (refresher) covers the law on force, the medical risks of restraint and how to look after someone afterwards. It is 30 questions in 45 minutes, and the pass mark is 24 correct.
The refresher questions are written for people who already do the job, so many describe real situations on the door: a drink that may have been spiked, a customer who seems confused but doesn't smell of alcohol, a bag left behind at the end of the night. Experience helps, but the exam expects the procedure the course teaches. Run through both mock tests before your course and check the explanations for anything that surprises you.
The refresher replaced the top up. Since 1 April 2025, door supervisors renewing their licence take the Level 2 Award for Door Supervisors in the Private Security Industry (Refresher). People still search for it as the top up.
Two multiple choice papers. Unit 1 has 35 questions in 55 minutes and you need 25 correct. Unit 2, physical intervention, has 30 questions in 45 minutes and you need 24 correct. There are practical assessments too.
Searching, protecting vulnerable people, terror threat awareness and spiking in Unit 1, then the law, risks and safe use of physical intervention in Unit 2.
In good time before your licence expires, because you need the refresher certificate before you apply to renew, and certificates normally take two to three weeks, sometimes longer. If your licence has already expired, you can still book. The SIA lets you renew before your licence expires or up to three years after it expires. The course must be booked at an approved training centre.
Yes. Complete the free ACT e-learning on the ProtectUK website before your course and bring your certificates. Our ACT training page explains how.
