Practise the theory part of a UK counterbalance forklift test, with 25 questions in 30 minutes on capacity plates, stability, pre-use checks, stacking, pedestrians and the law, and every answer explained.
Each attempt picks a new set of questions from a bank of 60, so you can practise as often as you like.
Low or uneven tyre pressure tilts the truck and reduces its stability. Report it and do not use the truck until it has been put right.
Hitting a door frame, pipe, beam or light with the mast or load can bring the load down or make the truck unstable. Know the height of your mast and load, and check clearances.
Forward tilt with a raised load reduces stability lengthways. Use it only at the stack face with the truck stopped, and only as far as needed to level the load for placing.
L117 says that once you have completed basic, specific job and familiarisation training, your employer should give you written authorisation. It should name the types of truck you may operate and any limits.
LPG escaping as a liquid is extremely cold and can freeze the skin. Wear suitable gloves and follow the training you have had for changing cylinders.
Harsh braking throws the load's weight forward over the front axle. With the load raised, this can tip the truck or spill the load, so brake smoothly and early.
Once the load is clear of the stack, stop and lower it to the travel position with the mast tilted back before you move off.
HSE guidance in L117 says lift truck operators in ports must be at least 18, unless they are being trained under adequate supervision.
The question bank has 60 questions across these topics. Every attempt mixes them at random.
The theory part of a forklift test checks that you understand what keeps the truck stable and the people around it safe. Our questions follow the HSE's approved code of practice for rider-operated lift trucks, known as L117.
They cover:
The pre-use inspection is a separate part of the test, but the same knowledge comes up in the theory questions. When you get a pre-use check question wrong, read the explanation and picture yourself walking round the truck in the right order.
The RTITB theory test for counterbalance trucks has 25 questions in 30 minutes. Most are multiple choice, and a few ask you to pick more than one answer.
A practical driving test and a pre-use inspection of the truck. Each part is graded separately, so you need to pass all three.
HSE guidance says operators should be over the minimum school leaving age, and at least 18 in ports.
The distance from the face of the forks to the centre of gravity of the load. The further out it is, the less the truck can safely lift, which is why the capacity plate shows both weight and load centre.
